Calcium Chloride Formula

Calcium chloride formula, also known as Calcium dichloride formula or Calcium chloride anhydrous formula, is given in this article. This inorganic compound is a white powder or white coloured crystalline solid, odourless, and is highly soluble in water. It is an ionic compound comprising of calcium and chlorine. There exist one calcium cation and two chlorine anion in the structure of calcium chloride. At room temperature, it is a solid salt which acts as an ionic halide. The chemical or molecular formula for calcium chloride is CaCl2. It can be naturally obtained from sinjarite and antarcticite in its hydrated form. Also, it is found in brine from salt deposits and salt lakes. Commercially it can be produced directly from limestone, and a large amount is also generated as a by-product from the Solvay process.

Properties Of Calcium Chloride Formula

The chemical formula of calcium chloride is CaCl2. Calcium chloride is hygroscopic, deliquescent, and dissolves in water exothermically.

Chemical formulaCaCl2
Molecular weight110.98 g/mol
Density2.15 g/cm3 anhydrous
Melting point772–775 °C anhydrous
Boiling point1,935 °C anhydrous

It is widely used as brine for refrigeration plants, to replenish calcium levels, as an antidote for magnesium poisoning, and as an acid-producing diuretic. When in calcium chloride comes in contact with skin it acts as an irritant by drying the moist skin. Ingesting it can cause burns in the mouth and oesophagus.
