Other quantities, such as speed and force, also involve direction. You can use vectors to represent those quantities that involve both magnitude and direction. One common use of vectors involves finding the actual speed and direction of an aircraft given its air speed and direction and the speed and direction of a tailwind. Another common use of vectors involves finding the resulting force on an object being acted upon by several separate forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any quantity that has both size and direction is called a&nbsp;<strong>vector quantity<\/strong>. If&nbsp;<em>A<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>B<\/em>&nbsp;are two points that are located in a plane, the&nbsp;<strong>directed line segment<\/strong>&nbsp;from point&nbsp;<em>A<\/em>&nbsp;to point&nbsp;<em>B<\/em>&nbsp;is denoted by&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cliffsnotes.com\/rails\/active_storage\/blobs\/redirect\/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBcVlrIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--1dffbbdf1cb7be32b07c8a9e5b7949addf0e7438\/11215.jpg\">. Point&nbsp;<em>A<\/em>&nbsp;is the&nbsp;<strong>initial point<\/strong>, and point B is the&nbsp;<strong>terminal point<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<strong>geometric vector<\/strong>&nbsp;is a quantity that can be represented by a directional line segment. From this point on, a vector will be denoted by a boldface letter, such as&nbsp;<strong>v<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>u<\/strong>. The&nbsp;<strong>magnitude<\/strong>&nbsp;of a vector is the length of the directed line segment. The magnitude is sometimes called the&nbsp;<strong>norm<\/strong>. Two vectors have the&nbsp;<em>same direction<\/em>&nbsp;if they are parallel and point in the same direction. Two vectors have&nbsp;<em>opposite directions<\/em>&nbsp;if they are parallel and point in opposite directions. A vector that has no magnitude and points in any direction is called the&nbsp;<strong>zero vector<\/strong>. Two vectors are said to be&nbsp;<strong>equivalent vectors<\/strong>&nbsp;if they have the same magnitude and same direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Figure 1&nbsp;demonstrates&nbsp;<strong>vector addition<\/strong>&nbsp;using the&nbsp;<strong>tail\u2010tip<\/strong>&nbsp;rule. To add vectors&nbsp;<strong>v<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>u<\/strong>, translate vector&nbsp;<strong>u<\/strong>&nbsp;so that the initial point of&nbsp;<strong>u<\/strong>&nbsp;is at the terminal point of&nbsp;<strong>v<\/strong>. The resulting vector from the initial point of&nbsp;<strong>v<\/strong>&nbsp;to the terminal point of&nbsp;<strong>u<\/strong>&nbsp;is the vector&nbsp;<strong>v<\/strong>&nbsp;<em>+<\/em>&nbsp;<strong>u<\/strong>&nbsp;and is called the&nbsp;<strong>resultant<\/strong>. The vectors&nbsp;<strong>v<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>u<\/strong>&nbsp;are called the&nbsp;<strong>components<\/strong>&nbsp;of the vector&nbsp;<strong>v<\/strong>&nbsp;+&nbsp;<strong>u<\/strong>. If the two vectors to be added are not parallel, then the&nbsp;<strong>parallelogram rule<\/strong>&nbsp;can also be used. In this case, the initial points of the vectors are the same, and the resultant is the diagonal of the parallelogram formed by using the two vectors as adjacent sides of the parallelogram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cliffsnotes.com\/rails\/active_storage\/blobs\/redirect\/eyJfcmFpbHMiOnsibWVzc2FnZSI6IkJBaHBBcWNrIiwiZXhwIjpudWxsLCJwdXIiOiJibG9iX2lkIn19--c1992fe0b6f5d3f86822b68a79361514f117a210\/11187.jpg\"><br><br><br><strong>Figure&nbsp;1<\/strong><br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Example of vector addition.<strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to multiply a vector&nbsp;<strong>u<\/strong>&nbsp;by a real number&nbsp;<em>q<\/em>, multiply the length of&nbsp;<strong>u<\/strong>&nbsp;by |&nbsp;<em>q<\/em>&nbsp;| and reverse the direction of&nbsp;<strong>u<\/strong>&nbsp;if&nbsp;<em>q<\/em>&nbsp;&lt; 0. This is called&nbsp;<strong>scalar multiplication<\/strong>. If a vector&nbsp;<strong>u<\/strong>&nbsp;is multiplied by \u22121, the resulting vector is designated as \u2212&nbsp;<strong>u<\/strong>. It has the same magnitude as&nbsp;<strong>u<\/strong>&nbsp;but opposite direction. There is a tailwind blowing in a southwest direction at 50 miles per hour. The&nbsp;<strong>bearing<\/strong>&nbsp;of a vector&nbsp;<strong>v<\/strong>&nbsp;is the angle measured clockwise from due north to&nbsp;<strong>v<\/strong>. In the example, the bearing of the plane is 270\u00b0 and the bearing of the wind is 225\u00b0.
