A&nbsp;<strong>word<\/strong>&nbsp;works as a symbol to represent\/refer to something\/someone in language to communicate a specific&nbsp;meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong>&nbsp;: \u2018love\u2019, \u2018cricket\u2019, \u2018sky\u2019 etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>&#8220;[A word is the] smallest unit of\u00a0grammar\u00a0that can stand alone as a complete\u00a0utterance, separated by spaces in written\u00a0language\u00a0and potentially by pauses in speech.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Morphology,&nbsp;<\/em>a branch of linguistics, studies the formation of words. The branch of linguistics that studies the meaning of&nbsp;<strong>words<\/strong>&nbsp;is called&nbsp;<em>lexical&nbsp;semantics<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>See More:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several criteria for a speech sound, or a combination of some speech sounds to be called a&nbsp;<strong>word<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>There must be a<strong>&nbsp;potential pause&nbsp;<\/strong>in speech and a&nbsp;<strong>space<\/strong>&nbsp;in written form between two words.<br><strong>For instance<\/strong>, suppose \u2018ball\u2019 and \u2018bat\u2019 are two different words. So, if we use them in a sentence, we must have a potential pause after pronouncing each of them. It cannot be like \u201cIdonotplaywithbatball.\u201d If we take pause, these sounds can be regarded as seven distinct words which are \u2018I,&#8217; \u2018do,&#8217; \u2018not,&#8217; \u2018play,&#8217; \u2018with,&#8217; \u2018bat,&#8217; and \u2018ball.&#8217;<\/li><li>Every word must contain at least&nbsp;<strong>one root<\/strong>. If you break this root, it cannot be a word anymore.<br><strong>For example<\/strong>, the word \u2018unfaithful\u2019 has a root \u2018faith.&#8217; If we break \u2018faith\u2019 into \u2018fa\u2019 and \u2018ith,&#8217; these sounds will not be regarded as words.<\/li><li>Every word must have a meaning.<br><strong>For example<\/strong>, the sound \u2018lakkanah\u2019 has no meaning in the English language.
