This is because there are several\u00a0measurement methods or systems\u00a0that are currently used around the world. Further, there are several systems that specify their own basic unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the most common units that are used presently are U.S. customary units and the metric units, including SI and non-SI units. Additionally, British Imperial units are also still used in some countries. Let\u2019s look at some of the units in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the SI Unit of Length?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the metric system, the SI unit of length is a&nbsp;<strong>metre<\/strong>&nbsp;which is defined as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cThe length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum within 1\u2044299792458 seconds.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Some of the other units also include:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>kilometres<\/li><li>nanometer<\/li><li>millimetres<\/li><li>centimetres<\/li><li>meters<\/li><li>decimeters<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To get an idea of how big the metric units are, look at the table below<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Metric<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Example<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Millimetre<\/strong><\/td><td>The thickness of a plastic id card or a credit card is about a millimetre thick<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Centimetre<\/strong><\/td><td>A fingernail is about a centimetre wide<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Meter<\/strong><\/td><td>A guitar is a meter long<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Kilometre<\/strong><\/td><td>The distance between cities is measured in kilometres<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Non-SI Length Units<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you look at the Imperial and U.S. customary systems, then the basic unit of length is the&nbsp;<strong>yard<\/strong>.
