If the subjects are a&nbsp;<strong><em>third person singular number<\/em><\/strong>, the verbs are used with&nbsp;<strong><em>s\/es<\/em>&nbsp;<\/strong>when they are in simple present tense<strong><em>.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>The verbs with&nbsp;<strong><em>s\/es<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;in the sentence are called singular verbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u2018Be\u2019 verbs<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;according to number and person of the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong><sub>Person<\/sub><\/strong><strong>\/<sup>Number<\/sup><\/strong><\/td><td>Singular<\/td><td>Plural<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>First<\/td><td>am<\/td><td>are<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Second<\/td><td>are<\/td><td>are<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Third<\/td><td>is<\/td><td>are<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>Example:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong><sub>Person<\/sub><\/strong><strong>\/<sup>Nmber<\/sup><\/strong><\/td><td>Singular<\/td><td>Plural<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>First<\/td><td>I am an excellent tennis player.<\/td><td>We are excellent tennis players.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Second<\/td><td>You are a nice person.<\/td><td>You all are nice people.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Third<\/td><td>Alex plays well under pressure.<br>He is a good player.<\/td><td>They are good at chasing.<br>They play well under pressure.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rule 2:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When the prepositional phrases separate the subjects from the verbs, they have no effect on the verbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A study&nbsp;<sup>(singular subject)<\/sup>&nbsp;on African countries&nbsp;shows&nbsp;<sup>(singular verb)&nbsp;<\/sup>&nbsp;that&nbsp;80% of the people<sup>&nbsp;(plural subject)<\/sup>&nbsp;of this continent&nbsp;live&nbsp;<sup>(plural verb)<\/sup>&nbsp;below the poverty line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The perspective&nbsp;of different people&nbsp;varies&nbsp;from time to time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fear&nbsp;of terrorists and militants&nbsp;has made&nbsp;them flee the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rule 3:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nouns connected by the conjunction&nbsp;<strong><em>and<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;in the subject work as the plural subject and take a plural verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Alex and Murphy are coming here.<\/li><li>Robin and his friends want&nbsp;to go on a tour.<\/li><li>Apples and mangoes are&nbsp;my favorite fruits.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rule 4:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the conjunction \u2018<strong><em>and<\/em><\/strong>\u2019&nbsp; is replaced by&nbsp;<strong><em>together with\/ along with\/ accompanied by\/ as well as<\/em><\/strong>, the verb will have no effect for the later part of these expressions. The words prior to these expressions are the subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Tom, along with his brothers&nbsp;is going&nbsp;to the city. (\u2018His brothers\u2019 is not the subject of this sentence.)<\/li><li>Alex, as well as his parents,&nbsp;is coming&nbsp;to the party.<\/li><li>The boys, accompanied by their teacher Mr. Robbins&nbsp;are planning&nbsp;a tour.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:&nbsp;<\/strong>If these expressions are replaced by \u2018<strong><em>and<\/em><\/strong>\u2019, the subjects will be regarded as plurals, and so the verbs have to be plural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong>&nbsp;Tom and his brothers are going to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rule 5:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some nouns are always singular and indefinite. When these nouns become the subjects, they always take singular verbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Any + singular noun<\/td><td>No + singular noun<\/td><td>Some + sin. noun<\/td><td>Every + sin. noun<\/td><td>Each + sin. noun<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Anybody<br>Anyone<br>Anything<\/td><td>Nobody<br>No one<br>Nothing<\/td><td>Somebody<br>Someone<br>Something<\/td><td>Everybody<br>Everyone<br>Everything<\/td><td>Each student<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Either*<br>Neither*<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>*<strong>Note:&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong><em>Either<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong><em>neither<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;are singular if they are not used with&nbsp;<strong><em>or<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong><em>nor<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Everybody wants to live happily.<\/li><li>Something is bothering him.<\/li><li>No human being lives in that house.<\/li><li>Neither of you is responsible enough to handle it.<\/li><li>Each student has to submit a separate assignment.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rule 6:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some nouns are always plural. These nouns have two parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Scissors, shorts, eyeglasses, pants, thongs, jeans, trousers, etc.<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>My pants are in the drawer.<\/li><li>Your eyeglasses are dirty.<\/li><li>These scissors are useless.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:&nbsp;<\/strong>If these words are preceded by the phrase&nbsp;<strong><em>a pair of<\/em><\/strong>, they will be regarded as singular subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A pair of pants is needed.<\/li><li>This pair of trousers is ugly.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rule 1: Singular subjects need singular verbs, while plural subjects require plural verbs. \u2018Be\u2019 verbs&nbsp;change the most according to the number and person of the subject.&nbsp; Other verbs do not change much on the basis of the subjects except the verbs of the simple present tense.
