In English grammar, \u2018do-insertion<\/strong>\u2019 or \u2018do-support<\/strong>\u2019 refers to the use of the auxiliary verb \u2018do\u2019, including its reflected forms \u2018does\u2019 and \u2018did’. There are some common uses of do-insertion which are described below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ask a question:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We consider a sentence, \u201cYou want money\u201d.
Here, ‘you’ is the subject, ‘want’ is the verb and ‘money’ is the complement. But there is no auxiliary verb in this sentence. That’s why we need to add a dummy ‘do’ to turn this assertive sentence into an interrogative sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • You want money (You do want money).
    -Do you want money?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Similarly, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • She likes the dress (She does like the dress).
      -Does she like the dress?<\/li>
    • He got the job (He did get the job).
      – Did he get the job?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      To make a negative sentence:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      We need to add the word ‘not’ to the auxiliary verb.
      Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • You want money.
        -You do not want money\/ You don’t want money.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Similarly, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • She likes the dress.
          -She does not like the dress\/ She doesn’t like the dress.<\/li>
        • He got the job.
          -He did not get the job\/ He didn’t get the job.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
