The past progressive tense<\/strong> is used to demonstrate an action that was happening<\/strong> in the past for a period of time in a particular context. The context can be a specific time or another action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Structures:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subject + was\/were + verb + ing<\/em> + . . . . . a specific time<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>
Alex was sleeping yesterday at 6.30 AMI was cleaning the dishes at around 5.30-6.30 yesterday.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
When + subject + simple past tense + subject + was\/were + verb+ing<\/em> . . . .<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>
When I went out, you were shouting from behind.When Alex came, I was sleeping.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Subject +  was\/were + verb+ing<\/em> + when + subject +  simple past tense . . . .<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>

Note: While<\/em> can also be placed between the two clauses, and one of the clauses<\/a> can be of simple past tense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
