In English, it begins with a&nbsp;capital letter and ends with a&nbsp;full-stop, or a&nbsp;question mark, or an&nbsp;exclamation mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>sentence<\/strong>&nbsp;is generally defined as a word or a group of words that expresses a thorough idea by giving a statement\/order, or asking a question, or exclaiming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is a good boy (statement), Is he a good boy? (question), What a nice weather! (exclaiming).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideally, a sentence requires at least one subject&nbsp;and one&nbsp;verb. Sometimes the subject of a sentence can be hidden, but the verb must be visible and present in the sentence. Verb is called the heart of a sentence. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do it. (In this sentence, a subject \u2018you\u2019 is hidden but verb \u2018do\u2019 is visible)&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[A sentence is] a&nbsp;group&nbsp;of words, usually&nbsp;containing&nbsp;a&nbsp;verb, that&nbsp;expresses&nbsp;a thought&nbsp;in the&nbsp;form&nbsp;of a&nbsp;statement,&nbsp;question,&nbsp;instruction, or exclamation&nbsp;and&nbsp;starts&nbsp;with a&nbsp;capital&nbsp;letter&nbsp;when written.\u201d &#8211; (Cambridge Advanced Learner\u2019s Dictionary &amp; Thesaurus&nbsp;\u00a9 Cambridge University Press.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Examples of Sentences&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Robert was a good king.<\/li><li>He had a great army.<\/li><li>He wanted to bring peace to his kingdom.<\/li><li>There were many others who wanted to become king.<\/li><li>They started plotting against him.<\/li><li>Their plots were failing because of some trusted friends of the king.<\/li><li>Then they started killing those trusted friends.<\/li><li>Eventually, they succeeded in their plan of killing the king.<\/li><li>Did they make a good move?<\/li><li>Can they find a new king without dispute?<\/li><li>After the death of the king, everyone wanted to be a king.<\/li><li>A great chaos broke out in the kingdom.<\/li><li>People were anxious and unhappy.<\/li><li>War does not bring anything good to the common people.<\/li><li>It only brings sorrow and dismay.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;all these examples of sentence contain at least one verb and one subject and gives a complete sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, a complete English sentence must have&nbsp;<strong>three characteristics<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>First, in written form, a sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a period (i.e., a full stop) [<strong>.<\/strong>], a note of interrogation (i.e., a question mark) [<strong>?<\/strong>], or a note of exclamation (i.e., an exclamation mark) [<strong>!<\/strong>].<\/li><li>Second, it must express a complete thought, not fragmented. &nbsp;<\/li><li>Third, it must contain at least one subject (hidden\/visible) and one verb comprising an independent clause. (An independent clause contains an independent subject and verb and expresses a complete thought.)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of Sentences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Structurally<\/strong>, sentences are of four types:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Simple sentence<\/li><li>Compound sentence<\/li><li>Complex sentence, and&nbsp;<\/li><li>Compound-complex sentence.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"simple\">Simple sentence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<em>simple sentence<\/em>&nbsp;must have a single clause (a single verb) which is independent, and it cannot take another clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I always wanted to become a writer. (One clause \u2013 one verb)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"compound\">Compound sentence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<em>compound sentence<\/em>&nbsp;must have more than one independent clause with no dependent clauses. Some specific&nbsp;conjunctions,&nbsp;punctuation, or both are used to join together these clauses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I always wanted to become a writer,&nbsp;and&nbsp;she wanted to become a doctor. (Two independent clauses \u2013 two verbs)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"complex\">Complex sentence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<em>complex<\/em><em>&nbsp;sentence<\/em>&nbsp;also has more than one clause but of one them must be an independent clause and the other\/others must be (a) dependent clause(es). There are also some particular connectors for the clauses of a complex sentence to be connected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know&nbsp;that&nbsp;you always wanted to be a writer. (Here, a dependent clause is followed by a connector and an independent clause. The other way around is also possible.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More&nbsp;Complex Sentence Examples :<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>When I woke up, the sun was yet to light the sky.<\/li><li>The ambulance arrived after the accident had taken place.<\/li><li>If you like the cake, we can pack an extra piece for later.<\/li><li>Before you go to bed, finish doing the dishes.<\/li><li>Even though it was raining, they started their trip.<\/li><li>We would love to visit your family home, provided there is no heavy traffic.<\/li><li>They did not move until the rain had stopped.<\/li><li>My friend left the country because she needed a fresh start.<\/li><li>Make hay while the sun shines.<\/li><li>I went along with the plan although I did not have a good feeling about it.<\/li><li>Since talking could not resolve the issue, there is no point going forward with the deal.<\/li><li>Whenever the prices hike, the monthly sales drop.<\/li><li>As I was crossing the road, a car slid right past me and crashed into a tree.<\/li><li>Many enjoyed the puppet show; however, Alison did not.<\/li><li>Being a gentleman, he held the door for his entire group.<\/li><li>The entire planet is bound to suffer if the ozone layer collapses.<\/li><li>We properly started enjoying the show when the Grammy-nominated actor graced the screen.<\/li><li>I know who stole the necklace.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"compound-complex\">Compound-complex sentence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<em>compound-complex sentence<\/em>&nbsp;(or&nbsp;<em>complex\u2013compound sentence<\/em>) is a mixture of the features of compound and complex sentences in one sentence. So, it must contain at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know&nbsp;that&nbsp;you always wanted to become a writer,&nbsp;but&nbsp;I always wanted to become a doctor. (Here, one dependent clause is followed by a complex connector and two independent clauses with a compound conjunction between them.)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Functionally,&nbsp;<\/strong>sentences are of mainly four types:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Declarative sentence<\/li><li>Imperative sentence<\/li><li>Interrogative sentence, and<\/li><li>Exclamatory sentence<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Declarative sentence:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An&nbsp;<em>assertive<\/em><em>&nbsp;sentence (declarative sentence)<\/em>&nbsp;simply expresses an opinion\/feeling, or makes a statement, or describes things. In other words, it declares something. This type of sentence ends with a period (i.e., a full-stop).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>I want to be a good cricketer. (a statement)<\/li><li>I am very happy today. (a feeling)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>More Examples of Declarative Sentence<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Alex is a good baseball player.<\/li><li>He plays for the Rockers club.<\/li><li>He always gives his best effort in the team.<\/li><li>He is a good leader.<\/li><li>I like him for his intensity.<\/li><li>He plays with passion.<\/li><li>Alex feels awkward when someone gives a compliment to him.<\/li><li>He is a humble man.<\/li><li>He is popular among his friends but he feels awkward with strangers.<\/li><li>He has many fans in his locality.<\/li><li>His father was a lawyer.<\/li><li>When he was young, his father died.<\/li><li>He is a real fighter.<\/li><li>He fought against all the odds of life and became successful.<\/li><li>His fans love him.<\/li><li>His mother raised him to be a gentleman.<\/li><li>He is always humble and patient with his fans.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"imperative\">Imperative sentence:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We use an&nbsp;<em>imperative sentence<\/em>&nbsp;to make a request or to give a command. Imperative sentences&nbsp;usually end&nbsp;with a period (i.e., a full stop),&nbsp;but under certain circumstances, it can&nbsp;end with a note of exclamation (i.e., exclamation mark).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Please sit down.<\/li><li>I need you to sit down now!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>More Examples of&nbsp;Imperative&nbsp;Sentence<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Bring me a glass of water.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t ever touch my phone.<\/li><li>Give me a pen and a pencil.<\/li><li>Play with intensity and courage.<\/li><li>Remember me when we are parted.<\/li><li>Never forget the person who loves you.<\/li><li>Take a step and don\u2019t move.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t be excited about everything without reason.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t rush or you will fall.<\/li><li>Read a lot to improve your writing skill.<\/li><li>Write whenever you get a chance.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t stay out at night.<\/li><li>Please open the door quickly.<\/li><li>Have a cup of cappuccino.<\/li><li>You wash your hand first and then eat.<\/li><li>Kindly bring the book to me.<\/li><li>Please forgive my meticulousness but you have spelled it wrong.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t ever call me a loser.<\/li><li>Watch your step before taking it.<\/li><li>Please grant me a loan.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"interrogative\">Interrogative sentence:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An&nbsp;<em>interrogative sentence<\/em>&nbsp;asks a question. These emotions can be of happiness, wonder, sorrow, anger, etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>What a day it was!<\/li><li>I cannot believe he would do that!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>May the king of Westeros live long!<\/li><li>Long live the king of Westeros.<\/li><li>May you two live long enough to see your grandchildren!<\/li><li>May God bless us all.<\/li><li>May you become successful enough to buy love!<\/li><li>May the almighty help in this tragedy!<\/li><li>Wish you a very successful married life.<\/li><li>Wish you a happy journey together.<\/li><li>May your team win the match!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Definition&nbsp;of Exclamatory Sentence:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sentence which expresses a sudden and intense excitement, disgust, admiration, shock, or sorrow, etc. is called an&nbsp;<strong>exclamatory sentence<\/strong>. This kind of sentence must have a note of exclamation (!) at the end or in the middle of the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> More Examples of&nbsp;Exclamatory Sentence <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Hey!
