A determiner usually appears at the beginning of the&nbsp;<strong>noun phrases<\/strong>&nbsp;and works as an&nbsp;adjective&nbsp;to modify the nouns. However, determiners are not necessary for every noun phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Determiners include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>a.<\/strong>&nbsp;The definite article:&nbsp;<strong><em>the<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Give me the book I read to you yesterday. (Specific book)<\/li><li>I want the pencil you borrowed yesterday.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>b.<\/strong>&nbsp;The indefinite articles:&nbsp;<strong><em>a, an<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Give me a book from the shelf. (A general\/random book from a specific shelf)<\/li><li>I want an apple.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>c.<\/strong>&nbsp;The possessives:&nbsp;<strong><em>my<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><em>your<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><em>his<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><em>her<\/em><\/strong>,<strong><em>&nbsp;our<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><em>their<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong><em>its<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><em>&nbsp;whose<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>My car is parked outside. (Specific car)<\/li><li>His house is near the bridge.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>d.<\/strong>&nbsp;The demonstratives:&nbsp;<strong><em>this<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><em>that<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><em>these<\/em><\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong><em>those<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>This is my book.<\/li><li>That house belongs to me.<\/li><li>Those ducks are beautiful.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>e.<\/strong>&nbsp;Interrogatives:&nbsp;<strong><em>which, what<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Which car do you want to buy?<\/li><li>What product do you use?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"quantifiers\"><strong>Quantifiers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Quantifiers are also determiners which modify a noun to indicate its quantity. The quantifiers are&nbsp;<strong>any,&nbsp;all,&nbsp;many,&nbsp;much,&nbsp;most,&nbsp;some,&nbsp;a few, and&nbsp;a lot of, a little, a large amount of, none, and the cardinal numbers [one, two, three, four],<\/strong>&nbsp;etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>I have some money but not a lot of it.<\/li><li>Many people died in that calamity.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:&nbsp;<\/strong>There are some rules for using determiners and quantifiers. Some of them can be used only with countable nouns and some of them with uncountable nouns while others can be used with either of them. Here is a chart for the determiners to be used with countable or uncountable&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.learngrammar.net\/english-grammar\/noun\">nouns<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>With Countable Nouns<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>With Uncountable Nouns<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>a\/an, the<br>this, that, these, those<br>none, one, two, three,. . . . . .<br>many<br>a (great\/large) number of<br>a few<br>few<br>fewer . . . . than<br>a lot of<br>some<br>any<\/td><td>the<br>this, that<br>none<br>much (in negatives or questions)<br>a large amount of<br>a little<br>little<br>less . . . . than<br>a lot of<br>some<br>any<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Examples of Quantifiers for countable nouns:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Jack mentioned&nbsp;<strong>few&nbsp;<\/strong>things during the discussion.<\/li><li>I bought&nbsp;<strong>many&nbsp;<\/strong>commodities from the fair.<\/li><li><strong>A number of<\/strong>&nbsp;people supported Jim in the meeting.<\/li><li>Rick asked&nbsp;<strong>several&nbsp;<\/strong>questions<strong>.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Few<\/strong>&nbsp;people attended the program.<\/li><li>Tom traveled to&nbsp;<strong>many&nbsp;<\/strong>countries.<\/li><li>We visited&nbsp;<strong>many<\/strong>&nbsp;places during the vacation.<\/li><li>I liked&nbsp;<strong>a number of<\/strong>&nbsp;books in the book fair.<\/li><li>Alice had been to that place&nbsp;<strong>several&nbsp;<\/strong>times.<\/li><li>I have bought&nbsp;<strong>several&nbsp;<\/strong>dresses from this shop.<\/li><li><strong>Many<\/strong>&nbsp;people liked this movie.<\/li><li><strong>A number of&nbsp;<\/strong>people opposed this matter.<\/li><li>You have to remember<strong>&nbsp;few&nbsp;<\/strong>things.<\/li><li>Bob forbid Jim&nbsp;<strong>several&nbsp;<\/strong>times to go there.<\/li><li>Aric has&nbsp;<strong>many&nbsp;<\/strong>friends on the varsity.<\/li><li><strong>Several&nbsp;<\/strong>issues were discussed in the meeting.<\/li><li>Ann has been living in this place for&nbsp;<strong>many&nbsp;<\/strong>years.<\/li><li>I have&nbsp;<strong>several&nbsp;<\/strong>works to do.<\/li><li>Suzan read&nbsp;<strong>few<\/strong>&nbsp;books on this topic.<\/li><li>I saw&nbsp;<strong>a number of<\/strong>&nbsp;guava trees in the garden.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Examples of Quantifiers for uncountable nouns:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Jeff is&nbsp;<strong>a bit&nbsp;<\/strong>tired.<\/li><li>Jim has&nbsp;<strong>much&nbsp;<\/strong>patience.<\/li><li>Alice had&nbsp;<strong>a little<\/strong>&nbsp;juice and nothing else.<\/li><li>We have&nbsp;<strong>much<\/strong>&nbsp;time to complete the project.<\/li><li>David has&nbsp;<strong>much&nbsp;<\/strong>experience.<\/li><li>Dana is&nbsp;<strong>a bit&nbsp;<\/strong>anxious.<\/li><li>Scaly is&nbsp;<strong>a bit&nbsp;<\/strong>busy.<\/li><li>Allen is&nbsp;<strong>much&nbsp;<\/strong>talented.<\/li><li>Alana was&nbsp;<strong>a little&nbsp;<\/strong>worried.<\/li><li>Give me&nbsp;<strong>a little&nbsp;<\/strong>water.<\/li><li>This film was&nbsp;<strong>much&nbsp;<\/strong>awaited.<\/li><li>Peter has&nbsp;<strong>much&nbsp;<\/strong>wealth.<\/li><li>Wait&nbsp;<strong>a bit<\/strong>!
