To be specific, a modifier is either an adjective or an adverb. The adjectives modify the nouns, and the adverbs modify the verbs or the adjectives or the other adverbs. See the details of&nbsp;adjectives&nbsp;and&nbsp;adverbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Alex bought&nbsp;a&nbsp;chocolate&nbsp;cake&nbsp;yesterday.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(Here, \u2018a\u2019 is an article which modifies the word \u2018cake\u2019 and the word \u2018chocolate\u2019 is the direct adjective of the word \u2018cake\u2019. So both the words \u2018a\u2019 and \u2018chocolate\u2019 are adjectives which modify the noun \u2018cake\u2019. The word \u2018yesterday\u2019 announces the time of the action, i.e., the verb \u2018bought\u2019. So it is an adverb which modifies the verb.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Murphy,&nbsp;the president\u2019s&nbsp;daughter, is&nbsp;very&nbsp;sick.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(Here, the phrase \u2018president\u2019s daughter\u2019 modifies the noun \u2018Murphy\u2019. In this phrase, \u2018the president\u2019s\u2019 modifies the noun \u2018daughter\u2019 but the whole phrase itself becomes an adjective when it modifies the noun \u2018Murphy\u2019. There is another adjective \u2018sick\u2019 which is modified by the adverb \u2018very\u2019.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The brown<sup>(adjective)<\/sup>&nbsp;dog was barking at me&nbsp;aggressively<sup>(adverb)<\/sup>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally,&nbsp;<strong>modifiers<\/strong>&nbsp;are of&nbsp;<strong>two types<\/strong>&nbsp;according to their position to the words they modify:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Pre-modifiers<\/li><li>Post-modifiers<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"pre\">Pre-modifiers:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pre-modifiers are the modifiers which modify the words that follow them in the sentence. Conventionally the adjectives are usually placed before the nouns. So, most of the adjectives are pre-modifiers. Adverbs are often placed before the words they modify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Articles, determiners, demonstratives, proper adjectives, descriptive adjectives, compound adjectives, participles<\/strong>, etc. are&nbsp;<strong><em>the adjectives<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;which come before the nouns and modify them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conjunctive adverbs, sentence adverbs,&nbsp;<\/strong>and some other adverbs can work being placed before the verbs\/adjectives\/other adverbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Generally<sup>(adverb)<\/sup>&nbsp;the<sup>(article)<\/sup>&nbsp;brown<sup>(descriptive<\/sup>&nbsp;<sup>adjective)<\/sup>&nbsp;dogs are nice.<\/li><li>Apparently<sup>(adverb)<\/sup>,&nbsp;that<sup>(demonstrative)<\/sup>&nbsp;bank has&nbsp;a lot of<sup>(determiners)<\/sup>&nbsp;security<sup>(<\/sup><sup>adjective)<\/sup>&nbsp;porcess.<\/li><li>Give me&nbsp;that<sup>(demonstrative)<\/sup>&nbsp;black<sup>(descriptive adjective)<\/sup>&nbsp;covered<sup>(past participle)<\/sup>&nbsp;shining<sup>(present participle)<\/sup>&nbsp;box.<\/li><li>(In the above sentence the noun \u2018box\u2019 has four pre-modifiers [adjectives].)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"post\">Post-modifiers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Post-modifiers are the modifiers which come after the words they modify. Customarily, the adverbs come after the verbs and modify them. However, some adjectives also come after the nouns and modify them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the&nbsp;<strong>adverbs of time, adverbs of manner, adverbs of place\/direction<\/strong>&nbsp;usually come after the verbs they modify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Appositives, prepositional phrases&nbsp;<\/strong>(adjectives\/adverbs),&nbsp;<strong>infinitives&nbsp;<\/strong>(adverbs\/adjectives)<strong>, dependent clause,<\/strong>&nbsp;etc. usually come after the nouns they modify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Jason Roy,&nbsp;a cricketer,<sup>(appositive)<\/sup>&nbsp;has been selected&nbsp;in the squad<sup>(adverb)<\/sup>.<\/li><li>Stark, our teacher,&nbsp;<sup>(appositive)&nbsp;<\/sup>gives us tasks&nbsp;to do<sup>(infinitive &#8211; adjective)<\/sup>&nbsp;in the class<sup>(adverb of place)<\/sup>.<\/li><li>Ronaldo, the captain of Portugal team,<sup>(appositive)<\/sup>&nbsp;plays&nbsp;exceptionally<sup>(adverb of manner)<\/sup>&nbsp;well.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A&nbsp;modifier&nbsp;is a word\/phrase\/clause which modifies other words in a sentence.
