They are recommended for people with\u00a0crossbites\u00a0(malocclusion, when the top and bottom teeth do not come together properly) and dental crowding (teeth that are competing for space grow in improperly). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-9\">The device works best in kids because the\u00a0bones in a child&#8217;s mouth are still growing\u00a0and their palates usually are not fused. \u00a0That makes them more easily moldable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-11\">An orthodontist usually cements an expander device to the teeth. Then, over time, you or the practitioner gradually increases the outward pressure by turning a key in the device.\u00a0Treatment lasts between three and nine months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0-13\">Palate expanders may be used to create more space for permanent teeth.
