Taste<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An acid tastes sour whereas a base tastes bitter.<br>The method of taste is not advised as an acid or a base could be contaminated or corrosive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Example: The flavours of curd, lemon juice, orange juice, and vinegar are all sour. Because they contain acids, these compounds have a sour flavour. Baking soda has a sour flavour. It\u2019s an example of a foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">b. Effect on indicators by acids and bases<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An indicator is a chemical substance which shows a change in its physical properties, mainly colour or odour when brought in contact with an acid or a base.<br>Below mentioned are commonly used indicators and the different colours they exhibit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>a) Litmus<\/strong><br>In a neutral solution \u2013 purple<br>In acidic solution \u2013 red<br>In basic solution \u2013 blue<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Litmus is also available as strips of paper in two variants \u2013 red litmus and blue litmus.<br>An acid turns a moist blue litmus paper to red.<br>A base turns a moist red litmus paper to blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>b) Methyl orange<\/strong><br>In a neutral solution \u2013 orange<br>In acidic solution \u2013 red<br>In basic solution \u2013 yellow<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>c)&nbsp;Phenolphthalein<\/strong><br>In a neutral solution \u2013 colourless<br>In acidic solution \u2013 remains colourless<br>In basic solution \u2013 pink<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Given&nbsp;are two possible physical tests to identify an acid or a base. a.
