It is called the&nbsp;<strong>remainder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Example:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">There are\u00a0<strong>7<\/strong>\u00a0bones to share with\u00a0<strong>2<\/strong>\u00a0pups.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>But 7 cannot be divided exactly into 2 groups,<br>so each pup gets 3 bones,<br>and there is&nbsp;<strong>1 left over<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mathsisfun.com\/numbers\/images\/remainder-7-2-pups.svg\" alt=\"7 \/ 2 = 3 R 1  (remainder 1)\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;7 divided by 2 equals&nbsp;<strong>3<\/strong>&nbsp;with a&nbsp;<strong>remainder of 1<\/strong>&#8220;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we write:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7 \u00f7 2 = 3 R 1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">As a Fraction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also possible to&nbsp;<strong>cut the remaining bone in half<\/strong>, so each pup gets&nbsp;<strong>3&nbsp;\u00bd<\/strong>&nbsp;bones:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7 \u00f7 2 = 3 R 1 = 3 \u00bd<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<strong>7 divided by 2<\/strong>\u00a0equals\u00a0<strong>3 remainder 1<\/strong>\u00a0equals\u00a0<strong>3 and a half<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check by Multiplying<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If we look at it &#8220;the other way around&#8221; we can check our answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2 \u00d7 3 + 1 = 7<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;2 groups of 3, plus 1 extra, equals 7&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Another Example<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mathsisfun.com\/numbers\/images\/remainder.svg\" alt=\"remainder 19 5\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>19 cannot be divided exactly by 5. The closest we can get (<em>without going over<\/em>) is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3 x 5 = 15<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>which is 4 less than 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the answer of 19 \u00f7 5 is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>19 \u00f7 5 = 3 R 4<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check it by multiplying:&nbsp;<strong>5 \u00d7 3 + 4 = 19<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">As a Fraction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We can also make a fraction with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>the&nbsp;<strong>remainder on top<\/strong>, and<\/li><li>the number you are&nbsp;<strong>dividing by on the bottom<\/strong>,<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>so we also have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>19 \u00f7 5 = 3 R 4 = 3&nbsp;<sup>4<\/sup>\/<sub>5<\/sub><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Division and Remainders : Sometimes when dividing there is something left over.
