Viral outbreaks occur\u00a0every autumn and winter Trusted Source\u00a0and primarily affect children younger than 2 years old, with infants\u00a0under 6 months at the highest risk of severe illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bronchiolitis obliterans<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Bronchiolitis obliterans, or\u00a0popcorn lung, is a rare and dangerous condition seen in adults caused by severe lung infections or chronic exposure to toxins in the air such as formaldehyde, ammonia, or metal oxide fumes. This disease causes scarring in the bronchioles. Scarring blocks air passages and causes airway obstruction that can\u2019t be reversed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>What are the symptoms of bronchiolitis?<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the\u00a0American Lung Association, the initial symptoms of bronchiolitis often mimic common cold symptoms. They may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>runny nose<\/li><li>fever<\/li><li>stuffy nose<\/li><li>loss of appetite<\/li><li>cough<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next several days, symptoms often get worse before gradually getting better. They might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>shortness of breath<\/li><li>wheezing<\/li><li>worsening cough that may be raspy<\/li><li>brief pauses in breathing<\/li><li>irritability<\/li><li>vomiting\u00a0after eating<\/li><li>having fewer wet diapers than usual<\/li><li>fatigue<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the\u00a0National Health Service, symptoms are generally worse between days 3 to 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to contact your child\u2019s doctor if they:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>are breathing faster than usual<\/li><li>having difficulty breathing<\/li><li>have significant appetite loss<\/li><li>have a persistent fever above 100.4<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>F (38<strong>\u00b0<\/strong>C)<\/li><li>are very tired or irritable<\/li><li>haven\u2019t had a wet diaper in 12 hours<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s particularly important to seek medical attention if your infant is less than 12 weeks old or has a heart or lung condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bronchiolitis obliterans symptoms tend to flare up when exercising or doing manual labor.
