When an allergic reaction occurs, the body releases a protein called histamine. Next, tiny blood vessels called capillaries leak fluid. This fluid accumulates in the skin and causes\u00a0inflammation\u00a0and a rash. As fluid accumulates under the skin, small bumps form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reaction can occur if a person consumes something or touches something that they are allergic to. This is known as \u201ccontact urticaria.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If acute hives results from an allergic reaction, the cause\u00a0may be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"block-3a79f0cf-c750-4f9e-b5f4-fa16d6fa86e4\"><li>a medication, such as:<ul><li>some\u00a0antibiotics<\/li><li>some\u00a0nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, such as\u00a0aspirin<\/li><li>angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, which are drugs for\u00a0high blood pressure<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>nuts, eggs, seafood, or another food allergen<\/li><li>latex<\/li><li>kiwi, banana, chestnuts, or mango, in people with a latex allergy<\/li><li>some plants, including nettles, poison ivy, and poison oak<\/li><li>additives in some foods, cosmetics, and other products<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hives can develop when the body reacts to an allergen.
