The key is to know when to seek medical care. Any of the following may cause abdominal pain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Appendicitis<\/li><li>Bowel obstruction<\/li><li>Cholecystitis\u00a0(inflammation of the gallbladder) with or without gallstones<\/li><li>Chronic\u00a0constipation\u00a0<\/li><li>Dissecting\u00a0abdominal aortic aneurysm<\/li><li>Diverticular disease, including diverticulitis<\/li><li>Early-stage\u00a0shingles\u00a0(a viral infection where pain begins before the appearance of a rash)<\/li><li>Excessive\u00a0gas<\/li><li>Food allergy<\/li><li>Food poisoning\u00a0(salmonella, shigella)<\/li><li>Gastroesophageal reflux\u00a0<\/li><li>Heartburn or indigestion<\/li><li>Hernia<\/li><li>Infectious mononucleosis<\/li><li>Inflammatory bowel disease\u00a0(Crohn&#8217;s disease\u00a0or\u00a0ulcerative colitis)\u00a0<\/li><li>Intussusception (While uncommon, this is a serious possible cause of pain in an infant who may be bringing the knees to the chest and crying.)<\/li><li>Irritable bowel syndrome\u00a0<\/li><li>Kidney stones<\/li><li>Lactose intolerance<\/li><li>Pancreatitis\u00a0(inflammation of the pancreas)<\/li><li>Parasitic infections (Giardia)<\/li><li>Sickle cell\u00a0crisis<\/li><li>Spinal fracture<\/li><li>Ulcers<\/li><li>Urinary tract infections<\/li><li>Viral gastroenteritis\u00a0(stomach flu)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Diagnostic tests may&nbsp;include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Barium enema<\/li><li>Upper gastrointestinal (GI) and small bowel series<\/li><li>Blood, urine and stool tests<\/li><li>Endoscopy of upper GI tract (esophagogastroduodenoscopy, or EGD)<\/li><li>Ultrasound of the abdomen<\/li><li>X-rays of the abdomen<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In infants, prolonged unexplained crying (often called colic) may be caused by abdominal pain that may end with the passage of gas or stool.
