These symptoms may range from moderate to severe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children with ulcerative colitis often go through peaks and valleys of the disease. They may not have symptoms for some time, then they may experience a flare-up of more serious symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"block-2004b6f7-458a-4c1b-85f7-f30578dbe244\"><li>anemia\u00a0due to blood loss<\/li><li>nausea<\/li><li>diarrhea, which may be bloody or have mucus<\/li><li>lack of appetite<\/li><li>fatigue<\/li><li>stomach pain<\/li><li>malnutrition, because the colon doesn\u2019t absorb nutrients as well<\/li><li>rectal bleeding<\/li><li>unexplained weight loss<\/li><li>nausea<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, a child\u2019s ulcerative colitis may be so severe that it causes other symptoms that don\u2019t seem to be related to the gastrointestinal tract. Examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>brittle bones<\/li><li>eye inflammation<\/li><li>joint pain<\/li><li>kidney stones<\/li><li>liver disorders<\/li><li>rashes<\/li><li>skin lesions<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These symptoms can make ulcerative colitis difficult to diagnose. The symptoms may seem like they\u2019re due to a different underlying condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, children may have a hard time explaining their symptoms.
