It may involve a mix of genetic and environmental factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it genetic?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers have identified more than\u00a0100 genes\u00a0that may increase the risk of developing the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children with Crohn\u2019s are more likely to have mutations in the genes&nbsp;<em>NOD2<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>CARD15<\/em>. Preliminary research suggests that these genes may cause the disease to appear at a younger age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Environmental factors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Interactions between environmental factors, infections, and genetic factors may lead to Crohn\u2019s. For instance, exposure to certain infections or environments may activate or change genes in ways that increase the risk of Crohn\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some possible causes and risk factors\u00a0include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Infections:<\/strong>\u00a0Certain viruses and types of bacteria can damage the intestines, increasing the risk of Crohn\u2019s disease.<\/li><li><strong>Intestinal bacteria:<\/strong>\u00a0People with Crohn\u2019s have less diverse populations of intestinal bacteria. Doctors do not know if this causes Crohn\u2019s, or if Crohn\u2019s affects this diversity.<\/li><li><strong>Race or ethnicity:<\/strong>\u00a0In the United States, white people are most likely to be diagnosed with Crohn\u2019s, and the diagnosis is\u00a0rare\u00a0in people of Asian or Hispanic descent.
