She ran out of her yard and down the road as fast as she could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When she saw what she saw, Tante Adela slammed the oven door shut.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Felix Bell\u2019s farm, she saw the neighbor drawing a bucket of water from the well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFelix, Felix!\u201d she called out. \u201cCome quick!&nbsp; There is a skunk in my oven!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAre you sure?\u201d said Felix.&nbsp; \u201cMaybe it is your cat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOf course I am sure!\u201d said Tante Adela.&nbsp; \u201cDoes my cat have a white stripe down his back?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI will come as soon as I draw this bucket of water,\u201d said Felix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tante Adela turned and dashed back to the road.&nbsp; She headed for the next farm, the farm of Louis Ross.&nbsp; After all, three heads are better than two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cOf course I am sure!\u201d said Tante Adela.&nbsp; \u201cDoes my cat have a white stripe down its back?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLouis, Louis!\u201d she cried, out of breath. \u201cCome right away! There is a skunk in my oven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA skunk?\u201d said Louis. \u201cAre you sure it is not a scrap of old fur coat you may have thrown away by mistake?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy would I throw away a fur coat?\u201d said Tante Adela. \u201cAm I the kind of person who would do that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have a point,\u201d said Louis Ross.&nbsp; \u201cI will come over as soon as I have finished feeding the chickens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The old woman turned to the road and limped to the farm of Samuel Roy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSamuel, Samuel!\u201d she cried out.&nbsp; \u201cYou must come to my farm.&nbsp; There is a skunk in my oven!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAre you sure?\u201d said Samuel.&nbsp; \u201cMaybe you saw a shadow inside as you opened the door.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The old woman turned to the road and limped to the farm of Samuel Roy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDoes a shadow have a bushy tail?\u201d said Tante Adela.&nbsp; \u201cDoes a shadow grit its teeth at me and snark?&nbsp; I don\u2019t think so!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI will come right over,\u201d said Samuel.&nbsp; \u201cJust as soon as I finish weeding the garden.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So Tante Adela went from farm to farm looking for help. By the time she made it back home, Felix and Louis were already there. Soon after, Samuel came too, and others who had heard about the skunk in Tante Adela\u2019s oven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYep, there\u2019s a skunk in there all right,\u201d said Madame Ross, who had opened and closed the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know that!\u201d said Tante Adela.&nbsp; \u201cThe question is, what to do about it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI will run home and get my gun,\u201d said Felix. \u201cThat will take care of that!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo, no!\u201d cried Tante Adela.&nbsp; \u201cThink of the smell!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe will not be able to bake bread in there for a month!\u201d said Madame Roy, and everyone agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cNo, no!\u201d cried Tante Adela.&nbsp; \u201cThink of the smell!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd it would spoil the pelt,\u201d said Samuel.&nbsp; He trapped for furs and knew what he was talking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat if we got a dog?\u201d said Alice, the daughter of Samuel and Madame Ross.&nbsp; \u201cA dog will bark.&nbsp; Maybe that will scare the skunk out of the oven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf the skunk gets scared,\u201d said Tante Adela, \u201cthink of what it would do!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat if we get a piece of meat and tie it to a string?\u201d said someone else.&nbsp; \u201cThe skunk will come out on its own when it smells it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have no meat,\u201d snapped Tante Adela.&nbsp; \u201cAnd if I did, I would surely not waste it on a skunk!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So this plan was dropped.&nbsp; No one else cared to use their own meat to lure the skunk out of the oven if Tante Adela wasn\u2019t going to use hers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cI have no meat,\u201d snapped Tante Adela.&nbsp; \u201cAnd if I did, I would surely not waste it on a skunk!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh, woe is me!\u201d wailed Tante Adela.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By then, everyone was getting bored with the question of the skunk.&nbsp; And it did not look as if Tante Adela was going to serve any food or drink for everyone who had come.&nbsp; Soon Felix Bell and his wife remembered they had to milk the cows.&nbsp; Louis Ross said he must get back to clean the barn.&nbsp; And one by one, everyone found a reason to head home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this time, Tante Adela saw Jules Martel come into the yard.&nbsp; The young man may be simple-minded, she thought.&nbsp; Still, who else could she turn to for help?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJules!\u201d she said.&nbsp; \u201cJules Martel.&nbsp; There is a skunk in my oven.&nbsp; Can you get him out without scaring him?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jules nodded his head.&nbsp; He walked over to the oven.&nbsp; He opened the door and leaned inside.&nbsp; He spoke in a low voice.&nbsp; No one could tell what he was saying.&nbsp; At last he stepped back.&nbsp; Then the sharp face of the skunk stuck out of the oven doorway.&nbsp; Everyone stepped back a few feet.&nbsp; The skunk wiggled its way over the edge, and dropped to the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slowly the skunk made its way through the yard, holding its head high.&nbsp; And it headed into the woods, where it disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tante Adela was thrilled.&nbsp; All the others were amazed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow did you get him to come out?\u201d said Samuel to Jules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tante Adela was thrilled.&nbsp; All the others were amazed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat DID you say to it?\u201d said someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just told him,\u201d said Jules, swinging his arms back and forth, \u201cthat if he stayed in the oven any more, he would begin to smell like Tante Adela\u2019s bread.&nbsp; And if that happened, none of the other skunks would come near him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWho would have guessed?\u201d Samuel Roy shook his head. \u201cThat a low creature like a skunk cares about what others creatures like him think of him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI suppose all creatures must have some sense of self-respect,\u201d said Alice Roy, \u201cno matter who they are.\u201d&nbsp; Alice Roy and the others nodded in silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/storiestogrowby.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/end.png?resize=300%2C81&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"end\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Once upon a time a plump old woman name Tante Adela lived in French Canada.&nbsp; She lived all alone with her big grey cat and the cows in her barn.
