{"id":9464,"date":"2022-10-11T06:37:17","date_gmt":"2022-10-11T06:37:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdr.foobrdigital.com\/?p=9464"},"modified":"2022-10-11T06:37:17","modified_gmt":"2022-10-11T06:37:17","slug":"what-is-a-margin-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mudassirbackup.infinitycodestudio.com\/index.php\/2022\/10\/11\/what-is-a-margin-call\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a Margin Call?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>What does \u201cMargin Call Level\u201d or \u201cMargin Call\u201d mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In forex trading, the&nbsp;<strong>Margin Call Level<\/strong>&nbsp;is when the&nbsp;<strong>Margin Level<\/strong>&nbsp;has reached a&nbsp;<em>specific<\/em>&nbsp;level or threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When this threshold is reached, you are in danger of the POSSIBILITY of having some or all of your positions forcibly closed (or \u201c<strong>liquidated<\/strong>\u201c).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Margin Level is the \u201cmetric\u201d and the \u201cMargin Call&nbsp;<em>Level<\/em>\u201d is a specific \u201cvalue\u201d of the metric (which is the Margin Level).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yeah, it\u2019s awkward. But don\u2019t blame us, we\u2019re not the ones who name these things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, some forex brokers have a&nbsp;<strong>Margin Call Level of 100%.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/20232444\/margin-call-level-diagram1.png\" alt=\"Margin Call Level Diagram\" class=\"wp-image-154915\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the specific example above,\u00a0 if the\u00a0<strong>Margin Level in your account falls to 100%<\/strong>\u00a0or lower, a \u201c<strong>Margin Call<\/strong>\u201d will occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a Margin&nbsp;<em>Call<\/em>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<strong>Margin Call<\/strong>&nbsp;is when your broker notifies you that your&nbsp;<strong>Margin Level has fallen below the required minimum level<\/strong>&nbsp;(the \u201cMargin Call Level\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This&nbsp;<em>notification<\/em>&nbsp;used to be an actual phone call, but nowadays, it\u2019s usually an email or text message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of how you\u2019re actually notified, the feeling isn\u2019t great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/14161447\/receive-margin-call.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/14161447\/receive-margin-call.png\" alt=\"Receive a Margin Call\" class=\"wp-image-154309\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A Margin Call occurs when your&nbsp;<strong>floating losses are greater than your Used Margin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that your Equity is less than your Used Margin (since&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.babypips.com\/learn\/forex\/what-is-unrealized-profit-or-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">floating losses<\/a>&nbsp;reduce your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.babypips.com\/learn\/forex\/what-is-equity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Equity<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cMargin Call Level\u201d vs. \u201cMargin Call\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Traders tend to get confused between a Margin Call Level and Margin Call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A \u201cMargin Call\u00a0<em>Level<\/em>\u201d is a\u00a0<strong>threshold<\/strong>\u00a0set by your broker that will trigger a \u201cMargin Call\u201d. It is a specific percentage (%) value of the Margin Level. For example, when the Margin Level is 100%.<\/li><li>A \u201cMargin Call\u201d is an\u00a0<strong>event<\/strong>. When a\u00a0Margin Call\u00a0occurs, your broker takes some sort of action. Usually, the action is \u201cto send a notification\u201d. This event only occurs when the Margin Level falls below a certain value. This value is the \u201cMargin Call Level\u201d.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about boiling water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/14173037\/boiling-water-bath.png\" alt=\"Boiling Water\" class=\"wp-image-154327\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For water to normally boil, the temperature must reach&nbsp;<strong>100\u00b0 C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The Margin Level is equivalent to\u00a0<strong><em>temperature<\/em><\/strong>. Temperature can vary and can be any number like 0\u00b0 C, 47\u00b0 C, 89\u00b0 C, etc.<\/li><li>The Margin Call Level is equivalent to 100\u00b0 C, which is a\u00a0<strong><em>specific temperature<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li><li>A\u00a0Margin Call\u00a0is equivalent to water boiling, the\u00a0<strong><em>event<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>when the liquid changes into a vapor.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example: Margin Call Level at 100%<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say your forex broker has a Margin Call Level at&nbsp;<strong>100%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that your trading platform will send you a warning notification if your Margin Level reaches&nbsp;<strong>100%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Margin Call Level = Margin Level @ 100%<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from receiving a notification, your trading will also be affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your account\u2019s Margin Level reaches<strong>&nbsp;100%<\/strong>, you will NOT&nbsp; be able to open any new positions, you can only close existing positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Margin Call Level at 100% means that your Equity is equal to or lower than your Used Margin.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This occurs because you have open positions whose floating losses continue to INCREASE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say you have a&nbsp;<strong>$1,000<\/strong>&nbsp;account and you open a EUR\/USD position with 1 mini lot (10,000 units) that has a&nbsp;<strong>$200<\/strong>&nbsp;Required Margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since you only have one position open, Used Margin will also be&nbsp;<strong>$200&nbsp;<\/strong>(same as Required Margin).<br><a href=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/14163345\/margin-call-level-usdchf-example1.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, you still suck at trading so right away, your trade quickly starts losing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s losing big time. (You&nbsp;<em>really<\/em>&nbsp;suck at trading.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re now down&nbsp;<strong>800 pips.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At&nbsp;$1\/pip, this means you have a&nbsp;<strong>floating loss of $800<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means your Equity is now&nbsp;<strong>$200<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Equity = Balance + Floating P\/L\n\n$200 = $1000 - $800<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Margin Level is now&nbsp;<strong>100%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Margin Level = (Equity \/ Used Margin) x 100%\n\n100% = ($200 \/ $200) x 100%<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/14164444\/margin-call-level-usdchf-example-floating-loss.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/14164444\/margin-call-level-usdchf-example-floating-loss.png\" alt=\"Margin Call Level Example with USDCHF having a Floating Loss\" class=\"wp-image-154318\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the Margin Level reaches&nbsp;<strong>100%<\/strong>, you will NOT be able to&nbsp;open any new positions unless:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>The market reverses back in your favor.<\/li><li>Your Equity becomes greater than your Used Margin<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If #1 doesn\u2019t happen, #2 is only possible if you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Deposit<\/strong>&nbsp;more funds into your account.<\/li><li><strong>Close<\/strong>&nbsp;out existing positions.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The account will be unable to open any new positions until the&nbsp;<strong>Margin Level increases to a level above 100%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens if your sucky trade continues to go against you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this happens, once your Margin Level falls further to ANOTHER specific level, then the broker will be forced to close your position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other specific level is known as the&nbsp;<strong>Stop Out Level<\/strong>&nbsp;and varies by broker.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What does \u201cMargin Call Level\u201d or \u201cMargin Call\u201d mean?
