{"id":9466,"date":"2022-10-11T06:38:35","date_gmt":"2022-10-11T06:38:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdr.foobrdigital.com\/?p=9466"},"modified":"2022-10-11T06:38:35","modified_gmt":"2022-10-11T06:38:35","slug":"what-is-a-stop-out-level","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mudassirbackup.infinitycodestudio.com\/index.php\/2022\/10\/11\/what-is-a-stop-out-level\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a Stop Out Level?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>What does \u201cStop Out Level\u201d or \u201cStop Out\u201d mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Stop Out Level is similar to the Margin Call Level, which was covered in the previous\u00a0lesson, except that it\u2019s much worse!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In forex trading, a Stop Out Level is when your&nbsp;<strong>Margin Level falls to a specific percentage (%) level<\/strong>&nbsp;in which one or all of your open positions are closed automatically (\u201cliquidated\u201d) by your broker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This liquidation happens because the trading account can no longer support the open positions due to a&nbsp;<strong>lack of margin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More specifically, the Stop Out Level is when the&nbsp;<strong>Equity is lower than a specific percentage of your Used Margin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this level is reached, your broker will automatically start closing out your trades starting with the most unprofitable one until your&nbsp;<strong>Margin Level is back above the Stop Out Level.<\/strong>&nbsp;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/20232349\/stop-out-level-diagram1.png\" alt=\"Stop Out Level Diagram\" width=\"760\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/20232349\/stop-out-level-diagram1.png 760w, https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/20232349\/stop-out-level-diagram1-360x332.png 360w\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your Margin Level is at or below the Stop Out Level, the broker will close any or all of your open positions as quickly as possible in order to&nbsp;<strong>protect you from possibly incurring further losses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This&nbsp;<em>act<\/em>&nbsp;of closing your positions is called a&nbsp;<strong>Stop Out<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that a Stop Out is not discretionary. Once the&nbsp;<strong>liquidation<\/strong>&nbsp;process has started, it is usually not possible to stop it since the process is automated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/20202130\/trader-liquidation.png\" alt=\"Trader Liquidation\" class=\"wp-image-154874\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Your broker\u2019s customer support team will probably NOT be able to help you aside from lending an ear while you weep loudly over the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>The&nbsp;<strong>Stop Out Level<\/strong>&nbsp;is also known as the&nbsp;<strong>Margin Closeout Value,&nbsp;Liquidation Margin, or Minimum Required Margin.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example: Stop Out Level at 20%<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s say your forex broker has a Stop Out Level at&nbsp;<strong>20%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that your trading platform will automatically close your position if your&nbsp;<strong>Margin Level reaches 20%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Stop Out Level = Margin Level @ 20%<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s continue with the example from the previous lesson,\u00a0What is a Margin Call Level?<a href=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/14164444\/margin-call-level-usdchf-example-floating-loss.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve already received a&nbsp;<strong>Margin Call<\/strong>&nbsp;when the&nbsp;<strong>Margin Level had reached 100%<\/strong>&nbsp;but still decide&nbsp;<em>not<\/em>&nbsp;to deposit more funds because you think the market will turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only are you a sucky trader, but you\u2019re a crazy trader also. A sucky crazy trader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyways, your sucky crazy self ends up\u2026absolutely WRONG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The market continues to fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re now down&nbsp;<strong>960 pips<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At $1\/pip, you now have a floating loss of&nbsp;<strong>$960!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means your Equity is now&nbsp;<strong>$40<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Equity = Balance + Floating P\/L\n\n$40 = $1000 - $960<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Your Margin Level is now&nbsp;<strong>20%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Margin Level = (Equity \/ Used Margin) x 100%\n\n20% = ($40 \/ $200) x 100%<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>*Used Margin can\u2019t go below $200 because that\u2019s the Required Margin that was needed to open the position in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/14174911\/stop-out-level-example.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/14174911\/stop-out-level-example.png\" alt=\"Stop Out Level Example\" class=\"wp-image-154336\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, your position will be&nbsp;<strong>automatically closed<\/strong>&nbsp;(\u201cliquidated\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When your position is closed, the Used Margin that was \u201clocked up\u201d will be&nbsp;<strong>released<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It will become Free Margin.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The end result for you will be depressing though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your floating loss of $960 will be \u201crealized\u201d, and your new Balance will be&nbsp;<strong>$40<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since you don\u2019t have any open trades, your Equity and Free Margin will also be&nbsp;<strong>$40.<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/14175433\/stop-out-level-example-realized-loss.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how your account metrics would look like in your trading platform at each Margin Level threshold:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-regular\"><table><tbody><tr><td><\/td><td><strong>Margin Level<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Equity<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Used Margin<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Free Margin<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Balance<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Floating P\/L<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Margin Call Level<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>100%<\/strong><\/td><td>$200<\/td><td>$200<\/td><td>$0<\/td><td>$1,000<\/td><td>-$800<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Stop Out Level<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>20%<\/strong><\/td><td>$40<\/td><td>$200<\/td><td>$0<\/td><td>$1,000<\/td><td>-$960<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Stop Out (Liquidation)<\/strong><\/td><td>\u2013<\/td><td>$40<\/td><td>\u2013<\/td><td>$40<\/td><td>$40<\/td><td>\u2013<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/24234328\/stop-out-trade.png\" alt=\"Stop OutTrade\" class=\"wp-image-155275\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you experience a Stop Out and see the aftermath in your account, this is how your eyes feel\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you had multiple positions open, the broker usually closes the least profitable position first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each position that is closed \u201creleases\u201d Used Margin, which increases your Margin Level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if closing this position is still not enough to get back the Margin Level above 20%, your broker will continue to close positions until it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Stop Out Level is meant to prevent you from losing more money than you have deposited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your trade continued to keep losing, eventually, you\u2019d have no more money in your account and you\u2019d end up with a&nbsp;<strong>negative account balance<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brokers would prefer not to have to come knocking on your door with a baseball bat to collect the unpaid balance, so a Stop Out is meant to try and\u2026 STOP\u2026 your Balance from going negative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What if I have multiple positions open?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The example above covered the scenario with you trading a single position. But what if you had MULTIPLE positions open?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hmmm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sounds like you love gambling so here\u2019s an example of how the&nbsp;liquidation process would work if you had&nbsp;<strong>two or more positions open<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each broker has its own specific liquidation process so be sure to check with yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BUT this is a popular approach and will at least give you a good idea of what kind of horror you might experience if you\u2019re trading too BIG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s pretend the Stop Out level is at&nbsp;<strong>100%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If at any point, the Margin Level drops below 100% of the margin required.. you will experience an&nbsp;<strong>AUTO LIQUIDATION&nbsp;<\/strong>of the position that has the&nbsp;<strong>largest unrealized loss!&nbsp;?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you have multiple positions, the open position with the&nbsp;<strong>greatest<\/strong>&nbsp;unrealized loss is closed first, followed by the&nbsp;<strong>next<\/strong>&nbsp;largest losing position, followed by the&nbsp;<strong>next<\/strong>&nbsp;largest losing position, and so on, UNTIL the Margin Level (maintenance margin) is back to 100% or higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/15130620\/auto-liquidation.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bpcdn.co\/images\/2019\/02\/15130620\/auto-liquidation.jpg\" alt=\"Liquidation\" class=\"wp-image-176872\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Depending on the size and unrealized P&amp;L of the open positions, all your open positions could be liquidated in order to meet the margin requirement!&nbsp;?????<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, YOU, and YOU&nbsp;<em>alone<\/em>, are responsible for monitoring your account and making sure you are maintaining the required margin at all times to support your open positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve been warned. Don\u2019t be crying to your broker when your position gets auto-liquated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can still cry of course.
