Here\u2019s how to find the Commitment of Traders report online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Open up the address below in your web browser. (https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/MarketReports\/CommitmentsofTraders\/index.htm)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once the page has loaded, scroll down a couple of pages to the \u201cCurrent Legacy Report<\/strong>\u201d and click on \u201cShort Format<\/strong>\u201d under \u201cFutures Only<\/strong>\u201d on the \u201cChicago Mercantile Exchange<\/strong>\u201d row to access the most recent COT report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It may seem a little intimidating at first because it looks like a big giant gobbled-up block of text but with a little bit of effort, you can find exactly what you\u2019re looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just press CTRL+F (or whatever the find function is of your browser) and type in the currency you want to find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To find the British Pound Sterling or GBP, for example, just search up \u201cPound Sterling\u201d and you\u2019ll be taken directly to a section that looks something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yowza! What the heck is this?! Don\u2019t worry. We\u2019ll explain each category below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Commercial:<\/strong> These are the big businesses that use currency futures to hedge and protect themselves from too much exchange rate fluctuation.<\/li>
  • Non-Commercial<\/strong>: This is a mixture of individual traders, hedge funds, and financial institutions. For the most part, these are traders who looking to trade for speculative gains. In other words, these are traders just like you who are in it for the Benjamins!<\/li>
  • Long:<\/strong> That\u2019s the number of long contracts reported to the CFTC.<\/li>
  • Short:<\/strong> That\u2019s the number of short contracts reported to the CFTC.<\/li>
  • Open interest<\/strong>: This column represents the number of contracts out there that have not been exercised or delivered.<\/li>
  • Number of traders:<\/strong> This is the total number of traders who are required to report positions to the CFTC.<\/li>
  • Reportable positions:<\/strong> The number of options and futures positions that are required to be reported according to CFTC regulations.<\/li>
  • Non-reportable positions<\/strong>: The number of open interest positions that do not meet the reportable requirements of the CFTC like retail traders.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    You can see a lot of things in the COT report but you don\u2019t have to memorize all of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    As a budding trader, you\u2019ll only be focusing on answering the basic question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
